Stone Masonry

Natural stone repair gets the same standard. On landmark and heritage-significant work, stone is matched by hand-chiselling rather than swapped for a machine-cut replacement that only looks close from the sidewalk. It’s slower. It’s also the only way the match actually holds up next to the original.

Heritage Stone & Brick Restoration

Heritage work asks more of a mason than an ordinary repair does: patience, and knowing why a detail was built the way it was before touching it. That standard holds on every heritage-era project we take on. Where original brick can’t be sourced or matched off the shelf, the work is a mix of sourcing and on-site recreation, not a strict either/or: we source from the heritage brickmakers who can still produce a discontinued clay brick where that route exists, and recreate it ourselves where it doesn’t. In practice, that recreation is most often a dye-matched facing rather than a whole-brick remake: every brick in an old wall already varies slightly from its neighbour, so matching a facing to that variation is closer to the real standard than an exact-copy one would be. And where a heritage-era building needs a facing that honours its original period look while meeting current structural code, that’s built to do both: old aesthetic, current code, no compromise on either side.

Repointing, Tuckpointing, and Brick Repair

Mortar fails before brick does, almost always. If you’re seeing crumbling joints, spalling brick, or the pale bloom of efflorescence across a wall, the underlying cause is worth diagnosing properly before any repair starts, not patched over. Our repointing and tuckpointing work covers everything from a single deteriorated course to a full façade, matched to the original joint profile and colour rather than finished in whatever’s fastest.

Here’s what’s actually at stake structurally. A brick wall was never meant to carry its own weight on brick alone: the mortar between courses is built to carry a share of that load too. When mortar gives way, the wall doesn’t fail all at once; the load quietly shifts onto the brick itself, so a brick that’s 4 to 5 inches deep ends up carrying its share of the wall on whatever’s left of its face, often as little as 2 to 3 inches. Repointing exists to catch that shift and reverse it: it returns a wall to carrying weight the way it was built to, which is exactly why repointing done properly, and done in time, is what keeps a rebuild off the table. Left long enough, that same shift is what eventually forces the rebuild conversation we’d rather a homeowner never have to have.
